LISTEN GRANDMA

 the reason I came back,

grandma,

is to climb the great tree.

The Mutarakwa.

The one beside the clear river,

Nyariginu.

Grandpa told me I should

when I grow up.

The reason I came back,

grandma,

is because I’ve climbed all the rest.

The Mitero,

The Mifondo,

The Migumo,

The Mikoe.

it is only the centuries old Mutarakwa,

near the river,

that i couldn’t climb.

It’s trunk was too straight,

too wide…

but i played beneath it

and remembered grandpa’s words

‘you’ll climb it when you are older’

I’ve conquered the books,

Grandma.

I’ve seen the world,

Grandma

I’ve stolen the hearts,

of fair ladies.

I’ve driven the big cars

as I promised.

Tell me then, Grandma

why,

when I come to climb the great Mutarakwa,

as Grandpa said I should,

I find only sawdust where i left it standing.
