1. How can you describe yourself in a summarized manner?
I like to think I am cool, calm, collected and composed.
2. When did you pen your first independent piece (away from school work)?
Just before high school. But, it was while I was a ‘mono’ 2003, when I was exposed to this beautiful phenomenon of poetry.
3. What inspires your writing? Quite a bit. From my feelings towards a subject to observations I have made. Most writers will agree that in the most mundane of moments, a piece crawls into your head!
4. Apart from writing what else do you do?
My day job is in Retail. I work for a global Telecommunications company. I love to kick back with family and my children by association. Spending time with a beautiful group of people, my bestest* best friends. They are awesome, fabulous. I have a special thing for great food at great places with great people.
5. Do you have any A.K.As/stage names?
Yes, I call them my alter egos. AmarePoeta which is Latin for poetry lover. She is more well known, sweet side with a bit of a punch. Doppelganger which is a German term meaning an apparition of yourself. She is The fearless one. She is bold and speaks on the sort of subjects Amarepoeta doesn’t. Black Widow which is a type of spider. She is the mysterious one.
6. What do you think is man’s greatest invention?
The wheel. The telephone. Chocolate…
7. Who would you term as a Kenyan hero? Why?
Pio Gama Pinto. He may have been of mixed race but his patriotism shone through.
8. The world ends tomorrow. What do you do till then?
Spend as much time as I can with my loved ones.
9. What’s your furthest memory backwards?
My first memory was standing on my dad’s toes. I think we were dancing. He said one day I would be as tall as he was.
10. If you were a cartoon character, who would that be?
Velma from scooby doo
11. Three words to describe your brain?
Chaos in order.
12. If you were to get a slap for every moment you wished you did something differently how sore would you be?
Red!
13. That song that never gets boring to your ears?
Hahaha which of the many. But, the first one that came to mind is Fantasy by EWD
14. What’s your preference? Writing or performing (poetry)?
I am partial to writing. But i love to watch performances.
15. What is that thing you did as a kid you wish you still would?
Play bano, bladda. Kuenda adventure. Sigh, good times.
16. What do you think of the Kenyan creative and artistic industry?
I think we need to take ourselves seriously. From our underground hip hop artists, to poets, to musicians, to entrepreneurs. Drawing from our experiences and not crazy fad following. Currently too many people are copy pasting!
17. Who’s that character you wish you’d pull outta the screen/book and elope with?
Idris Elba or Johnny Depp. Jerry Bruckheimer. Wilbur Smith and William Shakespeare.
